OAS has set June the 10th to resume the stalled
negotiation, the Lavalas camp has agreed and the
Convergence is holding out. Big mistake and the
Convergence, which is not an organized opposition,
will pay a heavy price.
The International community is tired and General
Collins Powell had made it clearly to the Lavalas and
the Convergence that both shall compromise. Assume the
OAS does not do anything; the status quo will remain
the same.
The IRI has shifted its strategy and for the first
time in that everlasting crisis the OAS is leaning
toward the Lavalas camp. This change of strategy is a
typical reflection of the situation on the field.
But in reality you have to understand the Haitian
politic to see why the Lavalas has made it easy to the
OAS’s commission. Reason: they have nothing to be
afraid from an organization that has no power to
enforce its ruling. Now, the Convergence is about to
commit the OPL’s mistake, remember IRI is distancing
itself and that group did not do anything to win the
heart of the Haitians people who are living inside and
outside of Haiti.
Reality:
The Bush administration is not going to assist the
Lavalas camp. It is a personal problem, I wish the
lavalas’ advisor could have seen that and asked
someone else to run. Last November election, a Lavalas
could have run easily it did not have to be Mr.
Aristide. Now we have two presidents who have a total
distaste toward each other, one is leading the richest
country in this planet and the other is leading Haiti.
It was expected, there is a time to fight and the
Haitian government has chosen the wrong time. Imagine,
you go downtown to take part in the pre-carnalesque
activities, a strong guy or a group try to fight with
you, if you have common sense you will not fight.
There is no reason to start a fight with full
knowledge you will be in the losing side. It is not
worth it. Haitians like the Palestinians are paying a
heavy price because they have elected or selected the
wrong leader.
Remember the presidency is not a privilege it is a
responsibility. You don’t do whatever you want. And
when you sign a paper, an agreement, you’ve better
stick with it.
Fact 1: Democracy is not only elected a president
there must be democracy within various branches of the
government.
Fact 2: the Police force has replaced the Tonton
Makoute since the hierarchies of that force are loyal
supporters of the Lavalas camp. Any other person in
order to lead the country must dismiss that force and
the PNH is too politicized.
Fact 3: The Convergence is not an alternative to the
Lavalas
Fact 4: The Lavalas regime is not going to receive a
dime from the Bush administration
Fact 5: Give in or destroy the whole country; a good
leader will give in not because he/she is a coward but
to prevent the worst; Daniel Fignole a populist had
accepted the presidency to prevent a US occupation, He
was a real Haitian, he was a real leader. A leader
shall not be selfish and shall see the country first.
Fact 6: Mr. Aristide shall do the right thing; take a
long vacation while it is not too late, even his close
entourage will welcome that move and the country will
thank him for that for doing a personal sacrifice.
Since he had wanted to reduce the term of the Senators
and deputies by doing an early election, for fairness,
he should reduce his term as well.  Otherwise, we have
to rely on the constitution and I don’t believe the
executive has that power to reduce the term of an
elected official. If it has to be done, it should be
across the board.
