From: Tttnhm@aol.com
March, Rally, and Public Forum
To Protest Coca-Cola and Cointreau's Complicity
In the Murder of Labor Activists in Colombia and Haiti
On Friday, June 7th activists from the Global Sweatshop Coalition, the Batay Ouvriye Solidarity Network, the Committee for Social Justice in Colombia, and ACT UP New York (Aids Coalition to Unleash Power) will hold a rally, march, and public forum against inhumane working conditions and unionbusting, including the murder of unionists in Haiti by Remy-Martin manufacturer of the liqueur Cointreau and in Colombia by Coca-Cola. ACT UP charges that Coca-Cola
provides only 1.5% of their workers in Africa with access to HIV/AIDS treatment and care.
The event will begin at 4:30 PM, with a rally at the corporate office of
Coca-Cola at 711 5th Avenue at 56th Street. Shortly before 5:30 PM,
the activists will march to the corporate office of Remy-Martin at
1350 6th Avenue just east on 55th Street, where a rally will be held
until 6PM. Visuals will include attacks on workers by a violent
Cointreau bottle and a can of Coca-Killer; the 5th Avenue rally will
also feature a 25-foot Coke bottle.
At 7PM, visiting labor activists from Haiti and Colombia will speak at a
public forum at 322 West 48th Street. The speakers include:
o Wilson Borja, President of the National Federation of State Workers
(FENALTRASE) of Colombia and member of the Colombian Congress; Borja
survived a December 2000 assassination attempt by rightwing paramilitaries.
o Paul Philomé of Batay Ouvirye, a workers' organizing center in Haiti.
The moderator will be Ray Laforest of AFSCME District Council 1707 and
Pacifica Radio's national board. Admission is free and open to all.
Borja and Philome are also scheduled to appear on WBAI's "Wake-Up Call"
(99.5FM) with host Mario Murillo on Friday, June 7 after 7:20 AM.
