12278: Joe Gaetjens, Haitan born player in top 100 stars of world cup




>From Bob Corbett:  Sports Illustrated CNN on-line has a list of the
100 Hall of Fame Players in the history of the World Cup.

Among them is Joe Gaetjens, Haitian born player who played on the
United States World Cup team of 1950 which upset England 1-0.

Gaetjens was living in Philadelphia and in those days the notion that
you must play for the nation of your birth were not strictly observed.
Geetjens was the center forward (today called center striker) and scored
the famous goal that beat England, then regarded as the best team in the
world.

Later on Gaetjens returned to Haiti in the 1960s and was regarded as
a danger by Papa Doc.  He died in prison.
