Is there really anything so unbelievable about that, Dotie?  What is the
source
of your reaction? Considering that Makandal was a Muslim, and that there
were
Muslim Maroons in Jamaica, whence Boukman came, why is this any less
plausible
than the uncritically and anachronistic assumption that Boukman was a
Vodou
priest? Revising history is something leading scholars of the
Afro-Atlantic
world have been doing for 20 years; it is only unbelievable that
Haitianists
have been so resistant to their influence. But then again, since
intolerance is
such a hallmark of Haitian society, I guess it has rubbed off on people
who
study the place, as is terribly obvious on this list.
And what of Cecile Fatima? Is there any more Islamic a name than Fatima?
She
was at least as instrumental in this mythically-tinged ceremony as
Boukman, I
would argue.
