A vehicle purchased in Haiti will be expensive and may have hidden problems along with a history of hard use. A old sturdy thing like a Toyota land cruiser (at least 15- 20 years old)with standard transmission works well. Make sure you get everything repaiered after purchase. If you are working for an NGO or other organization which has tax free status in Haiti, consider donating a vehicle purchased in US to them for your use while you are there and for them to keep after you leave - money may need to cleverly change hands - To get the vehicle there, put it in a half container with all of the other things you are taking and perhaps ome things needed and purchased by the organization with whom you will be working. Personally had no problem with using the container idea but did not donate the vehicle. That proved cumbersome becasue of need to register and maintain. Your organization may be willing to do these things in excahnge for some use of the vehicle. If you will not be with any particular organization, perhaps you could partner with an appropriate organization in same manner. John Judson (drjudson@aol.com)
