12442: world cup and haiti (fwd)

June 30, Delmas 60 cyber cafe, 9:30 am

although i don't consider myself an avid football fan, i have watched with
some amusement the "fanatik brasil" carry on during the last two weeks i've
been in country. This morning is no exception. Several minutes ago a group
of about 1500 revelers marched up Delmas, blocking both lanes of traffic, up
and down. At the centre of the march was the "rara" core...drumming and
blowing and whistling...the fans were chanting and singing.
Most people in their homes along delmas came out to watch the
procession....opinions have varied: some regard it with detached amusement;
others are less charitable, particularly when they are caught up in a
roadblock of fans dancing and singing and playing football in the middle of
delmas...
The good friend i was watching the game with promptly locked herself in
her room with 3 minutes left and put on her headphones to listen to music.
She was cheering for Germany and had no intention of listening, ad nauseum,
to the endless discussions of Rinaldo's technique or how many chances
Germany missed....or how badly Germany was beaten by Brazil(my uninformed
opinion is that Germany blew it)
Just one quick observation from my informal taxi and tap tap polls....
One driver informed me that "Senegal lost because they were out in the
discos the night before. They aren't as determined as the Brazilians, and
they are happy with getting to 2nd or 3rd round. For them, that is winning".
Oh, I managed to take in RAM at the Olafson on Thursday night. Lots of
fun. They put on a good show, as always.
