VODOU JAZZ
Jean-Paul Bourelly & Ayibobo
Wednesday, July 24th
7:30pm @ Joe's Pub -- Public Theater
Genre-spanning guitarist Jean-Paul Bourelly makes a rare NYC appearance with
his Haitian roots group Ayibobo, playing "modern music with roots" Bourelly
has performed with an astonishing array of artists, including Miles Davis,
Elvin Jones, McCoy Tyner, Cassandra Wilson and the JB Horns. Born to first
generation Haitians, Jean-Paul applied his own singular musical vision to a
blend of meringue, VODOU cult music, and hard-edged Chicago blues, inspired
by Muddy Waters, Jimi Hendrix and a splash of Santana.
Formed with members of the seminal mizik racine group Foula, Bourelly and
Ayibobo's mid-90's album Freestyle (DIW) was a benchmark for experimental
Haitian based Jazz, blending motifs from traditional vodou chants and
rhythms. This concert features Chico Boyer - bass/drums, Bonga Gaston -
drums, Jean Ramone - sax/drums, and Marie Horgline - dance/vocals, and will
include music from Freestyle as well as recent, unreleased material.
