12857: stanley honorat re:12792 discontent with aristide (fwd)
From: stanley honorat honorat <shonorat@hotmail.com>
i find it odd that some people will scream bloody murder at american
involvement in destablizing aristide's government, yet don't remember that
it was 20,000 american troops who brought him back in octbober of 1994. i
think that in allowing them to bring him back, aristide gave them the
opportunity to further involve themselves in the affairs of this country.
some people will say that since he was overthrown by a coup d'etat, he had
no other recourse but to solicit a foreign occupation. in response to this,
i would like to use leslie f. manigat who was president from feb 88- june
88. after the coup d'etat that toppled his government, and his subsequent
departure, he was asked whether he would solicit aide from the oas and un
for his return (up to and including military involvement), he stated that he
would never caution the invasion of haitian soil by foreign troops, even if
it is to return to power. this is the act of a man who has a sense of
history. aristide's act leaves a lot to be desired in that category, and
maybe can even be argued as treason, but before being more certain on that
point, i'd need to research a little more.
