13048: dgcraig Re: 12986, 12976 Change in Haiti (fwd)
From: Dan Craig <dgcraig@att.net>
As someone who has visited Haiti a number of times, and who has studied
the country for several years, I too have concluded that my talents may
best be suited to help encourage the US government to formulate a more
positive, productive policy toward Haiti.
Unfortunately, I have become cynical toward my own government and its
motives. It seems to me that too often the United States puts its own
interests ahead of those of the people(s) we are supposedly trying to
help. Also too often it appears that the Federal government arrogantly
presumes to know better what a nation seeking help needs, rather than
respecting that country's right and ability to define its own needs
within the context of its own culture.
I frequently turn to the postings on this list for inspiration and
enlightenment; and I am grateful for the many contributors who provide
them.
