13095: Arthur posts asking about: Duncan Stewart, physician to Le Roi Christophe. (fwd)

From: Tttnhm@aol.com

Can anyone help, Iain Fraser Grigor, a journalist and occasional book-writer
based on the west coast of Scotland? Grigor wrote to me, and I am forwarding
his request to the Corbet list.

Grigor writes:

I wonder if you can offer me any leads, or point me in any directions, with
regard to the following.

Ralph Manheimšs translation of Aime Cesairešs play on the Haitian king,
Christophe, refers to one '"Steward, Christophešs Scottish physician"

Hubert Colešs Christophe: King of Haiti refers to, "the Scotsman, Duncan
Stewart, Professor of Anatomy at the Royal College and marechal de camp
commanding the Royal Haitian Medical Corps". (This title manages the
staggering feat of failing to refer to James' Black Jacobins in its
bibliography!!!)

Written in Blood, by Robert Debs Heini and Nacy Gordon Heini (Boston, 1978),
also says that Christophe's physician was called Duncan Stewart.

(I presume that these Stewart/ds are all the same man).

What, I wonder, is the source, or sources, of these three references?

Do you know anything about this man Duncan Stewart? Autobiography?
Biographies? Entries in biographical dictionaries or professional registers?
Journal articles? Lightweight magazine pieces? Unpublished papers?
Missionary and abolitionist sources? Sources in the UK? Perhaps, even,
sources in Haiti?

Anything you might have will be welcome. Or if you know of any Haitian
experts in this field, perhaps you could tell me who they are, or even
forward this e-mail to them.

(I am a 'trained historian' - whatever that is! - and know my way round
libraries and archives).

And why the interest? Well, with a name like Duncan Stewart, this guy is
Highland. So he is barely out of one colonial cauldron (Culloden, et al) and
into another. The contrast intrigues me.....

Best wishes

Iain Fraser Grigor.
