A couple of days ago I finished Edwidge Danticat's new book, "After the
Dance, A Walk Through Carnival in Jacmel, Haiti," Crown, 2002. I cannot
recommend it higher. It's a lovely story about the Jacmel carnival Ms.
Danticat attended in 2001.  I learned a lot about Jacmel from her writings
and research -- and she writes with much optimism and respect, giving a
voice to aspects of Haitian life that are too often ignored by others. I
hope we see more travel writing from Ms. Danticat, and soon.
