* The government outlined plans on 19 August to adopt a "systematic
approach" to block the illegal entry of immigrants due to the strain placed
on the country's health, education and social services. The statement was
made after 164 illegal Haitian migrants were picked up by a Bahamas Defence
Force vessel. Over 700 migrants from Haiti have been arrested in the past
three weeks, bringing the total for the year to more than 3,000. They have
been repatriated at a cost to the government of US$0.5m. Last year, US$1.2m
was spent on repatriations.
