Investigation into the killing of journalist Brignol Lindor: at least 10
individuals are charged in the case

--
Port-au-Prince, September 17, 2002-(AHP)- The examining magistrate in charge
of the case of the journalist, Brignol Lindor, who was killed in Petit Goave
on December 3, 2001, completed his open investigation into the killing.

Judge Fritzner Duclair announced that at least 10 individuals have been
indicted in the case and are expected to appear before the court.

However several of these suspects have not yet been arrested, according to
the judge.

Fritzner Duclair nevertheless expressed satisfaction at the work he has
accomplished during the eight months of investigation.

The Secretary General of the Association of Haitian Journalists (AJH), Joseph
Guyler C. Delva, declared that he was pleased to learn that the investigation
into the killing of journalist Brignol Lindor has been completed and he was
glad that the judge was able to render his decision.

However Mr. Delva deplored the fact that the report of the investigation
absolved the former mayor of Petit-Goâve, Dumay Bonny.

Mr. Delva believes that the ex-mayor of Petit-Goâve had made threats against
a group of individuals including the journalist who was killed.

In remarks he made publicly at the end of November, 2001, Mr. Dumay had asked
the justice system to practice zero tolerance against those who utilized
government property for purposes of sabotage and destabilization. Among the
individuals cited at the time was indeed Mr. Brignol Lindor.

Guy Delva said he hopes that the police will not delay in carrying out the
arrest of all those who are accused of this murder.

For its part, the September 30 Foundation described examining magistrate
Fritzner Duclair's findings on the killing of Brignol Lindor as a positive
step.

The coordinator of the Foundation, Lovinsky Pierre Antoine, was pleased that
this investigation was able to be completed and expressed his hope that
theprosecutor's office and the police will see to the next stages in the case
in order to create conditions for a fair trial.

The September 30th Foundation coordinator deplored that the justice system
did not also act against those who made an attempt on the life of Mr. Joseph
Céus Duverger, a member of a grass roots organization, shortly before the
killing of Brignol Lindor.

Gravely wounded by machette blows, Mr. Duverger was left for dead.

Mr. Duverger's supporters were upset with Mr. Lindor whom they claimed was a
close associate of the individuals who assaulted Mr. Duverger.

The Association of Haitian Journalists (AJH) also acknowledged that the
murder of Mr. Lindor was committed as an act of reprisal following the deadly
attack against Mr. Duverger.
