GROUP PLANS TO SEEK
REPARATIONS FOR HAITI
GEORGETOWN -- An international conference of Africans and descendants of
Africans will begin a campaign next month seeking to have France repay Haiti
tens of millions of dollars the Caribbean state had to pay for its
independence.
The issue is one of many contentious items to be discussed at the first African
and African Descendants World Conference on Racism to be held in Bridgetown,
Barbados, Tuesday through Oct. 6, said Maxie Fox, an executive member of
Guyana's African Cultural and Development Association.
American activist Angela Davis, actor Danny Glover and Winnie Madikzela-Mandela
are expected to be among the delegates from 168 countries.
