Broward County Commission Libraries Division Presents
Haitian Art Exhibit at Main Library

BROWARD COUNTY, FL - "Cross Currents: Haitian Art in the Diaspora," an
exhibit of works by eight Haitian artists, will be on display November 2-30
in gallery six, on the sixth floor of the Main Library, 100 S. Andrews Ave.,
Fort Lauderdale.
     Presented by Emile Viard/Vie & Art Collections, the exhibit will
feature
paintings by Fritzvelt Rourouss Antoine, Erns Turgo Bastien, Bermy Dorvil,
Lucien Leconte, Vidho Lorville, Garry Mabour, Arlene Magloire and Guy C.
Syllien.
A reception for the opening of the library exhibit will be held from 5 to 8
p.m. November 2 at the Main Library. The exhibit and reception are open to
the public free of charge.
     Born in Miragoâne, Fritzvelt Rourouss Antoine is a self?taught artist
who
paints, draws, creates collages and graphics, and restores art. Described as
  neo?expressionism, his art has been displayed in exhibitions including the
Xe Salon International d'art Contemporain sur la Musique, Saint?Barthélemy
d'Anjou (2000), the Musée de la Vigne et du Vin, Saint?Lambert du Lattay
(1995), the Ecole Nationale des Arts, and the Institut Française d'Haiti
(1986?1991). He has served as the decorator for the Folkloric Ballet Company
in Haiti.  studied at the Ecole National des Arts (ENARTS).
     A native of Port?au?Prince, Haiti, Erns Turgo Bastien is a painter,
sculptor and art teacher. His art, considered constructivism, has been
exhibited in the Old School Square Cultural Arts Center, Delray Beach, FL
(2001), the College of the Bahamas, Nassau (2000), the African and Caribbean
Arts Festival, St. Louis, MO (1995), the Heritage Arts Festival, Atlanta, GA
(1994), and the Alliance Française, Toronto, Canada (1993).
     Bermy Dorvil was born in Dondon and is skilled in painting and art
restoration. His art is a blend of naturalism, primitive and naïve art,
which
he studied in 1978 at the Philomé Obin School, Cap?Haïtien, Haiti. Since
1980, Bermy has exhibited his works in solo and group shows in the United
States, Holland, France, Germany, Venezuela, Spain and Haiti.
     Lucien Leconte was born in Port?au?Prince, Haiti. He is the founder and
artistic
director of La Galerie Lezard in Dakar. Described as an artist in the
abstract expressionism and neo?expressionism styles, he has displayed works
in exhibitions including shows at the Milagro Gallery, Delray Beach, FL
(2000), the Synergy Gallery Creative Center for the Arts and Humanities,
West
Palm Beach, FL (2000), the Bank of Central West Africa, Senegal (1999),
ART/MUR at the Charles DeGaule Airport, Paris (1997), the White Chapel
Gallery, London (1997), the House of Culture of Pria, Cape Verte (1995), and
the M.A.N. Gallery, Cameroun (1994).
     Born in Carrefour, Haiti, Vidho Lorville paints, teaches art, and
creates
sculptures and multimedia collages. His style is described as neo?realism.
He
holds a bachelor of fine arts degree from the Ecole National des Arts
(ENARTS), Haiti. He has presented solo exhibitions at Wyndy Morehead Fine
Arts, New Orleans, LA (2002), the Porche West Gallery, New Orleans, LA
(2001), Le Centre d'Art, Port?au?Prince, Haiti (2001), and has participated
in a group exhibition at the Tebo Touche d'Art, Pétion?Ville, Haiti (1998).
     Garry Mabour studied at the Ecole National des Arts (ENARTS). His style
is defined as both surrealism and abstract. His collective exhibitions
include the Gathering of Kuumba, Delray Beach, FL (2002) and ENARTS Institut
Française d'Haiti, Musée de Pantheon (Mupana), Port?au?Prince, Haiti, and he
presented a solo exhibition at the Musée de Pantheon. Mabour has taught art
as a professor at ENARTS and participated in the realization of the monument
Capois?la?Mort au Champ de Mars in Port?au?Prince.
     A self?taught artist born in New York, Arlene Magloire moved to Haiti
in
1983. She returned to New York in 1991 and took art classes with John
Goodman
at Queens College. After she began painting professionally, she returned to
Haiti and continued studying on her own. Exhibitions of her work have
included: The Botanical Gardens, Linz, Austria (2002), Le Meridien
Restaurant, Hollywood, FL (2002), Goldsmith College?University, London,
England (2002), 2nd Ibiza International Competition, Ibiza, Spain (2002),
Condor Arts, Linz, Austria (2002), Poço da Vila Art Gallery, Figueira da
Foz,
Portugal (2000), a private solo show in Untermeitingen, Germany (1999) and
the Touche d'Art Gallery, Pétion?Ville, Haiti (1996).
     Born in Gonaïves, Guy C. Syllien started drawing and painting at ten
years old by imitating some of the Haitian masters. He studied at the
College
Canado Haïtien, Metropolitain d'Haiti Eftec in Haiti, and later moved to
Miami and enrolled in Miami?Dade Community College. He continued his
education as a student of visual arts at the New World School of the Arts,
and became a professional artist. He has exhibited at the Universal Studio,
Miami, FL (2002), the New World School of the Arts, Miami, FL (1999), Rara's
Studio, Port?au?Prince, Haiti (1985) and Fete du Drapeau, Gonaïves, Haiti
(1980).
