>From my Miami-based vantage point I can say that Americans living in here,
have been moved by the images of emaciated men and women, little girls
dressed in their Sunday best and more importantly the look of fear and sheer
desperation etched on the faces of these asylum seekers.
Yesterday, most of the social service agencies serving the Haitian community
were flooded with calls from individuals, organizations and businesses
wanting to help the detainees.  During the numerous protests that were held
throughout the day, the support from the general population was palpable. We
were being cheered on by folks from all walks of life who must have been
moved themselves by those images.

This may not reflect the sentiments of all Americans, but it can be safe to
say that Miamians have been very empathetic thus far.
