Folks,

Daniel Simidor, one of the producer-hosts of the "Haiti: The
Struggles Continues", will be the featured speaker at this
bicentennial celebration of Dessalines kicking some Napoleonic
imperialist butt. In addition to Daniel's work, there will be a
performance by a renowned Haitian dance group and yes...free Haitian
food.

LIU is in what used to be known as Downtown Brooklyn but which in the
parlance of gentrification is now known as Metrotech/BAMville at the
corner of Flatbush and Dekalb Avenues. Just minutes away from the
Brooklyn or Manhattan Bridge and the BQE, LIU is across from Junior's
Restaurant at the Dekalb Avenue stop of the D,M,N,Q and R trains and
near the Nevins Street stop on the 2,3,4 and 5 trains.

To commemorate the anniversary of the Battle of Vertières, in which
Dessalines's Haitian troops defeated Napoleon's French imperial
forces in 1803, the Latin American and Caribbean Studies (LACS)
Program at Long Island University, Brooklyn, is pleased to
sponsor "Haitian Bicentennial Prelude" night on November 14 from 6:00
to 9:00 p.m. in collaboration with the Haitian Information Center
and the Haiti 2004 Initiative.

The evening's program begins with a talk at 6:00 by Haitian community
activist and poet Daniel Simidor on the events leading up to Haitian
independence and the first years of the new republic.  Dr. Celia S.
Lichtman, Acting Chair of LACS and Chair of LIU, Brooklyn's
Department of Foreign Languages and Literature, will provide opening
remarks, along with LIU Adjunct Instructor Nicole Falade of the Haiti
2004 Initiative and Professor Halbert Barton of LIU, Brooklyn's
Department of Sociology and Anthropology.

Following Daniel Simidor's talk, the Haitian group the Ibo Dancers of
Haiti and Paulette Saint-Lot will present "Haiti chante et danse" at
7:30.  The evening will end with a reception featuring Haitian
cuisine.

The "Haitian Bicentennial Prelude" celebration is free and open to
