just passing along some news

1. this morning there are demonstrations with tires buring all over Port au
Prince...from Carrefour to Petionville with the demonstrators shouting "Down
with Aristide."  Public transportation is at a halt therefore people cannot
get to work and school this morning.

2.  Wednesday afternoon in the busy area of Delmas 43, about 1 pm, as many
nearby schools were dismissing for the day,  there was a police shootout
with reportedly four thieves who had first stolen the uniforms and guns of
Haitel security guards at their tower location on Delmas 45, and then
proceeded to rob a house on Delmas 43.   There were some police officers
eating lunch at a nearby restaurant who phoned for backup;  a vehicle with
police in riot gear (gray uniforms) arrived at the scene and a bloody
shootout ensued.   It was reported that all the thieves were killed by the
police.  (Zero tolerance in action!)
