The Royal Bahamas Defence Force apprehended 41 illegal Haitians Wednesday in
the South Beach district, bringing the total of illegal immigrants entering
the country this year to 4 044.
At about 1:20 a.m. the Royal Bahamas Defence Force received information of a
grounded Haitian vessel and a team of marines was dispatched from the Coral
Harbour base to the area to investigate.
The marines discovered a blue and black 40-foot wooden sailing sloop on
which were 41 illegal Haitians, 38 males and three females. One immigrant
was found dead.
The immigrants were turned over to immigration at the Detention Centre for
processing.
The apprehension came at the beginning of diplomatic talks with Haiti's
Foreign Minister Phillippe Antonio and The Bahamas' Minister Fred Mitchell.
Probing issues including illegal immigration, drug trafficking and other
matters of mutual concern to both countries are being discussed.
The last reported illegal immigrants found in The Bahamas occurred earlier
this month when 74 Haitians, comprising 64 males and 10 females, were
discovered near Long Island.
