14717: Voudon Flag Display:NYTimes:Lemieux (fwd)
From: JD Lemieux <lxhaiti@yahoo.com>
VOUDON DISPLAY Faith and art intersect in the glittering
sequined flags that adorn the voudon temples of Haiti.
Intended to invoke and honor the hundreds of highly
individual spirits of the voudon pantheon — these flags
probably originated in the beadwork of the Yoruba people of
Africa, and the creators draw upon a wide spectrum of
symbols and designs to match the theme. Beginning tomorrow,
more than 50 of the flags will go on view through March 6
in "Sequined Surfaces: Haitian Voudon Flags" at the Mishkin
Gallery of Baruch College, 135 East 22nd Street, Manhattan.
