Garcelle Beauvais-Nilon

Assistant District Attorney Valerie Haywood on the ABC Television
Network^s "NYPD Blue" Haiti's finest export may also be its best
ambassador. This year Garcelle Beauvais-Nilon begins her third season on
20th Century Fox's "NYPD Blue" as a series regular. She plays Valerie
Haywood, a no-nonsense, intelligent Assistant District Attorney and
love-interest of Baldwin (Henry Simmons). Beauvais-Nilon recently starred
opposite Chris Rock and Anthony Hopkins in the Disney/Touchstone comedy
"Bad Company."

Serendipity has guided Beauvais-Nilon's life from the very beginning. Born
in the lush environs of St.Marc, Haiti. At age seven she immigrated to the
U.S. with her siblings and her mother, who sought greater opportunity for
her brood. While her mom attended nursing school in New York,
Beauvais-Nilon stayed in a boarding school, then with family in
Massachusetts, adjusting to severe culture shock. "Sesame Street" taught
her English - she knew only French and Creole. She was also the only
black student in her elementary school, having come from a country with a
black majority. To make matters worse, Beauvais-Nilon recalls, "it was
freezing cold!" The weather finally got the best of her mother, who
packed up the family and headed for culturally diverse Miami, as her
youngest daughter turned 16. In Florida Beauvais-Nilon continued to be
active in school and whetted her appetite for acting through stage plays
and variety shows.

Encouraged by friends and family, Beauvais-Nilon began modeling at age
seventeen, appearing in print ads, catalogs and commercials. She signed
with Ford Models in New York and appeared in magazine layouts for Avon,
Clairol and Mary Kay Cosmetics, and in catalogs for Neiman Marcus,
Nordstrom and Macy's. Her stunning beauty has graced the pages of Ebony
and Essence magazines, as well as the runway couture shows of Calvin
Klein and Isaac Mizrahi

she was thirteen and started modeling. Her first acting gig was in Miami
