In this series of paintings, Carrefours/Crossroads are places of
exploration and exploitation, remembered scars of reality and spirit.
At times with a brush, at times with a knife, contrasting fluid wash
with rough impasto, Cauvin constructs crossroads that serve as
meeting places for images of an enslaved past and an oppressed
present.
The viewer of the paintings and drawings gathered here is challenged
by the bold contrast of anonymity, sadness, and staged tableaux with
the lively abundance of Caribbean color and landscape. Human figures
appear deformed, drawn in states of disequilibrium, while the
constant image of water, of the sea, evokes the horrors of the Middle
Passage as well as the sadly current plight of Haitian refugees.
Marie-Hélène Cauvin studied Printmaking at Temple University and has
exhibited before in Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Puerto
Rico, and several cities in the US. This is her first exhibition in
Boston.
