15352: Burnham re: Habitiation LeClerc and Katherine Dunham (fwd)

From: thor burnham <thorald_mb@hotmail.com>

I was asked to forward this to the list by Cameron Brohman. It concerns
Habitation LeClerc. They wanted the list to be aware of the event. They also
wanted people to know that, should they get the chance while in Haiti, to
ask for a tour of the site. The forest has a life of it's own, it would
appear.

best,
Thor Burnham

Katherine Dunham : Anthropologist Artist, Activist
Date : Friday June 6, 2003
Location: International House, University of Chicago

Katherine Dunham has been many things in her life: an
anthropologist, studying maroon communities in
Jamaica, vodou initiation rites and dance in Haiti,
candomblé in Brazil, and black Muslim groups in
Chicago; an artist, pioneering Caribbean and African
dance in the United States and Europe, founding her
own dance school, choreographing multiple productions,
and authoring several books; and an activist,
advocating for women's rights, civil rights, and
democracy throughout the world. She has been all of
these separately and concurrently.

Throughout, she has been involved with, and deeply
connected to, Haiti - from her first visit there in
1936 to conduct fieldwork as an anthropology student
from the University of Chicago to her current efforts
to convert a 50-acre "urban forest", situated in the
middle of a densely-packed neighborhood on the edge of
Port au Prince, into a botanical garden.

Ms. Dunham will be returning to the University of
Chicagoto speak about this project, the forest, and
her life-long relationship with the people and spirits
of Haiti.

A public lecture by Katherine Dunham will be of
interest to many among students, staff and faculty at
the University of Chicago. Yet we also anticipate
great interest in this event from the local community,
from the Haitian community in the Chicago area, from
the art community in the city,
and from students and faculty at other universities in
the area. This event will consist of two parts: (1) an
academic conference honoring Ms. Dunham's
scholarly impact and legacy in many disciplines, and
(2) a keynote addressby Ms. Dunham, followed by a
question-and-answer session.
