Twoubadou Saturday, and ska on Sunday

HAITIAN MELODIES

Meanwhile, Haitian twoubadou, a silky and romantic take on Haitian compas,
takes the stage at Bayfront Park on Saturday at the Haiti Twoubadou
Festival. ''Twoubadou'' translates as ''troubadour'' and, as that
designation implies, the style is more concerned with melody, lyrics,
harmonies and acoustic instruments than some of its Caribbean competitors.

To get a taste of twoubadou, pick up Haiti Twoubadou Volume 3, the latest
project from Fabrice Rouzier and Clément Bélizaire. Many of the musicians on
the album are set to perform Saturday and it's a sweet and soaring
collection that, even though mostly in Creole, still resonates with
Anglophones, simply because of its superior melody. Still, they do offer an
English take on Bob Marley's Turn Your Lights Down Low that manages to
capture the spirit of the original while adding a particularly Haitian
twist.

While much of the emphasis at the recent Haitian Music Awards held in Miami
was on the more uptempo mix of compas and hip-hop, twoubadou has emerged as
a competing style and is increasing in popularity. The Haiti Twoubadou
Festival should help cement its popularity on this side of the Florida
Straits.
