14 illegal migrants captured ashore in Palm Beach County

JUPITER -- Border Patrol officials searched for at least two more illegal
immigrants after capturing 14 others who came ashore early Monday.

Debris from the group's boat, which came from the Bahamas and apparently
capsized in the inlet, was scattered along a quarter-mile stretch of beach
in the Jupiter Inlet Colony, a wealthy enclave about 90 miles north of
Miami.

Border Patrol supervisor Arthur Bullock said 11 Haitians, two Guyanese and
one Jamaican were captured, but at least two other Guyanese were being
sought in thick brush nearby.

``We don't know how many more are out there,'' Bullock said.

Two of the immigrants taken into custody said they were the boat's captains,
officials said.

Residents called authorities about 2:30 a.m. Monday after seeing some of the
immigrants.

Most migrants who arrive illegally are subject to detention and deportation
proceedings unless they succeed in petitioning for political asylum or other
legal immigration status. The biggest exception is Cuban migrants who reach
U.S. soil -- they are usually allowed to stay.
