Sentencing of Haitian smugglers begins

Three Haitian men who helped smuggle 229 refugees on a rickety wooden ship
from the island to the Rickenbacker Causeway last year will spend between 15
and 33 months in federal prison before they are deported.

The refugees' arrival and dash for freedom amid rush-hour traffic on the
causeway on Oct. 29 was televised live in South Florida and around the
country.

Those sentenced include Jean Eddy Louis, 19, who received 27 months; Jean
Phillip Petite-Homme, 52, sentenced to 33 months; and Genel Osmin, 37, who
received a 15-month sentence. Three other members of the crew, including the
boat's captain, Edner Dorvil, will be sentenced today by U.S. District Judge
Joan A. Lenard.
