Authorities apprehend 133 illegal immigrants

The Department of Immigration Enforcement Unit apprehended 133 illegal
immigrants on Monday in the areas of Carmichael Road, Lyford Cay, Old Fort
Bay, and Coral Harbour. According to a press release from the Ministry of
Immigration and Labour, the department is keen on reaffirming its commitment
to controlling the influx of illegal immigrants on Bahamian borders and have
united with the Royal Bahamas Police and Defence Force along with the U.S.
Coast Guard.
Of the number of illegal immigrants captured on Monday, 20 were released
after processing and of the remaining 113, six were females and 107 males.
The nationalities in the female group were listed as two Haitians; two
Jamaicans, one Brazilian and one American-Danish.
With regard to the men, there were 94 Haitians, three Americans, two
Dominicans, two Jamaicans, two Trinidadians, one Brazilian, one Cuban, one
Colombian and one Honduran.
During the week of April 28 to May 4, a total of 55 illegal immigrants were
apprehended, processed and detained at the Carmichael Road Detention Centre.
In the group the nationalities included 34 Haitians, 12 Jamaicans, five
Guyanese and four Cubans.
The mentioned persons were apprehend in New Providence and Bimini.
During the same time last week 58 illegal immigrants were repatriated to
their respective homelands. There were 44 Haitians and 14 Jamaicans in the
group repatriated last week, with their relatives paying the expenses to
have them returned home.
No current figures have been released from the Ministry to date, with
regards to the expenses incurred from the repatriation exercises.
However, between the months of January to March, the ministry spent
$254,998. 32 to repatriate 1,162 illegal immigrants, with 912 Haitians being
included in that number.
At the Detention Centre there are presently 316 illegal immigrants housed
with the group consisting of 255 Haitians, 24 Cubans, 11 Jamaicans and five
Guyanese.
The mentioned nationality groups make up the four largest housed on the
compound that are expected to also be repatriated in the not too distant
future.
The ministry also called upon concerned citizens interested in protecting
the national borders, to contact the hotline at 322-3884 and pass on the
information.
