Take it to the limit

The South Florida-based trio Sky'z Da Limit calls its music "hip-hop
Creole." The emphasis is telling since "Creole hip-hop" might, at first
listen, sound more on the mark for three MCs who rap over beats primarily in
the language of Haiti. Sly 1, Osmosis and St. Mic also rhyme in English on
Young Haitian in America, a number from the album Haiti: Love & Politics (GQ
Records). And their studio ally, Sene-X Charles, fulfills the traditional
hip-hop role of track master, providing the vocal trio with steady,
predictably metered backing.

But that accompaniment is low-budget and borderline generic, excepting a few
attention-getting melodic moments that go undeveloped. It's probably for a
reason: Sky'z Da Limit do not seem to want too much audio distraction
between them and their lyrics. The real emphasis of Haiti: Love & Politics
is on language -- and, by extension, identity. Haitian Creole, with its
percussive pidgin French, is the idiom, the rhythm and the raison that
really drives tracks such as Kiyes Ki Responsab and Koripsyon. Sky'z Da
Limit performs on Saturday at West Palm Beach's Hilton Palm Beach Airport,
150 Australian Ave., for a Haitian Mother's Day celebration hosted by
Haitian Women of Palm Beach County. The presentation of Haitian art, food,
music, dance and folklore starts at 7 p.m. Admission is $75. Call
561-951-3679.
