Rev Raps Housing Boss Gibson over Homes for Haitians
The Punch
June 12, 2003, p.1

Popular preacher Rev. Neil Ellis has warned Housing Minister Shane Gibson to
ensure that for every Haitian home he builds, a house is also constructed
for a Bahamian.

Bishop Ellis’ angry message caught Gibson by surprise. The pastor delivered
it during his sermon on Sunday as Minister Gibson sat in the front pew of
Ellis’ Mt Tabor Baptist Church in Pinewood Gardens.

Gibson is a member of Mt Tabor—and his wife is a Rev in the church. Gibson
squirmed visibly as Rev Ellis pointed him out and stormed:

“You better make sure that for every house you build for Haitians you
construct a home for a Bahamian in Farm Road.” Rev Ellis was referring to
Government plans to rebuild homes destroyed by fire in the Haitian shanty
towns of Pidgeon Pea and The Mud near Marsh Harbour in Abaco. Farm Road is
PM Perry Christie’s constituency. Rev Ellis is the PM’s personal pastor and
religious guru. And Rev Ellis is also known as “the DPM.”

Looking straight at Gibson, Rev Ellis said, “The PM and you listened to me
during the election campaign—and if you gat sense ya’ll better listen to me
on these illegal Haitians and Jamaicans.”

Rev Ellis said most of the Haitians in illegally-built shanty towns do not
pay light or water bills. He said they siphon off water from pipelines and
run long drop cords from one house to many other homes.

He told the PM to ship all Haitians who were not here before July 10, 1973,
back home—but not on Bahamasair as it was too costly.

And Rev Ellis said the violent kill-crazy culture of Haitians and Jamaicans
is wrecking our society.

“Bahamians may cuss or throw a rock or ‘jook’ you if they get mad. But
Haitians and Jamaicans will kill you for petty things,” he said.

Over 30,000 Bahamians have applied for low-cost homes. Gibson moved into a
$600,000 home on Skyline Heights earlier this year.
