15972: Burnham re Kettan. (fwd)
From: thor burnham <thorald_mb@hotmail.com>
For those on the list who are experiencing a little cognitive dissonance
about the extent to which drugs, drug money and the culture of the drug
trade have permeated society here, just think about Kettan's presence prior
to his arrest. Everybody knew who he was. Everybody knew where he lived.
Everybody knew where his kids went to school. Everbody was terrified of him.
The joke about enforcement was that Kettan and the head of the DEA greeted
each other at Union school while picking up and dropping off their kids.
Indeed, they were thought to be friends.
Still having a hard time grasping the extent to which drugs are floating the
boat? Come to Haiti where a rock of crack is 25 gdes and is called "fam
blanche" or "Visa". Why? Because it's three minutes out of Haiti. Not much
"magical and mysterious" about that.
And I should note that the story about the teacher being beaten wildly
differs from the account related to me, as well as the account written in
the Haiti Observateur, which was suspect anyway.
The real question is who is taking Kettan's place? Will it be a
provisional/interim appointment or will he be elected? Or is he already in
office? I'm betting on the latter.
best,
Thor Burnham
