Ex-Haitian soldier is arrested
BY DAVID OVALLE

A former Haitian army soldier accused of torture was arrested by immigration
agents in Fort Pierce on Friday.
Olichard Sauveur, accused of ''physically abusing people who were resisting
arrest,'' is being held at the Krome detention center, said Ana Santiago, a
spokeswoman for the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
It was unclear when authorities believe Sauveur committed the human rights
abuses. He came to the United States from Haiti in the early 1990s, Santiago
said.
The arrest was part of an ongoing effort by immigration authorities to crack
down on foreign nationals living in the United States who are suspected of
human rights abuses overseas.
Agents of a newly created group known as the human rights violators unit are
working on several new cases across the country to detain and deport these
suspects.
Authorities in Washington said that immigration agents in southern
California on Friday also arrested a second suspect: Thi Dinh Bui, 61, who
came to the United States from Vietnam in 1994.
Bui is accused of torturing fellow prisoners -- and killing two of them --
in a ''re-education'' camp after Saigon fell to Communists in 1975.
In Florida and the rest of the country, about 50 human rights suspects have
been arrested since 2000, including several members of a death squad that
operated in Honduras in the 1980s.
