16441: Harvey: Re: 16425: Cunningham: Christians vs Voodoo (fwd)
From: Sean Harvey <seanharvey@juno.com>
The sentence that stuck out in this very long email was at the end:
"We thank you in advance for giving to see this nation become a blessing,
not a curse."
Thanks goodness for Terry Snow and his minions. The poor Haitians didn't
even know they were a curse for the past two hundred years, but thanks to
Pastor Terry and Youths With a Mission that's all going to change!
I can only hope that the various fringe Protestant sects operating in
Haiti today provide an increased level of social services and a safety
net for their parishoners, thus offering some net benefit to Haitian
society. But I don't see how inculcating a sense of the inherent
inferiority of Haitian history, culture and identity -- i.e. race,
(Pastor Terry would no doubt vociferously deny this despite the profound
racism at the heart of his message) -- into the rural working classes
does anyone any good in the long run.
