CARACAS, Aug 20 (Reuters) - Venezuela was forced to overcome a two-goal
deficit for a 3-2 friendly victory over Haiti on Wednesday in one of its final
matches before the start of South American qualifying for the 2006 World Cup in
Germany.
Venezuela controlled most of the play in the first half but the best chances
fell to the visitors, including a shot by Alexandre Boucicat in the 23rd
minute that was deflected onto the post.
In the second half, Haiti surged into a two-goal lead with headers from Jean
Phillippe Peguero and Sampeur Maxo before the home side staged a late rally.
Venezuela's comeback began in the 77th minute when Leonal Vielma converted a
penalty and six minutes later a slip in the Haitian defence allowed Hector
Gonzalez to equalise. With the momentum firmly in their favour, Giobany Ribero
rounded off the rally with the winning goal just two minutes before the final
whistle.
Venezuela opens the South American qualification round for the World Cup
against Ecuador in Quito on September 6.
