Border Patrol detains
17 Haitians, Jamaican
Seventeen Haitians and one Jamaican were detained Sunday after their boat
came ashore in Jupiter.
Nine men, five women and four children were taken into Border Patrol custody
to be deported, said Barbara Gonzalez, a spokeswoman for the Bureau of
Customs and Border Protection. A man and a woman were slightly dehydrated,
and received medical treatment.
Residents saw the immigrants after they reached shore in Jupiter Inlet and
left the boat, Jupiter police Sgt. James Feeney said. Officers arrived to
round them up while Border Patrol officials headed to the scene.
Officials were investigating to determine whether smugglers were involved.
