16877: Horwitz: Re: Fondwa University reception in Brooklyn, October 26 (fwd)
From: C & C Horwitz <chorwitz@earthlink.net>
The University of Fondwa (UF), a new sustainable agricultural and small
business development university, is under construction in the mountains of
Fondwa, south of Leogane. Father Joseph Phillipe, who established Fonkoze,
one of Haiti's largest and most successful alernative banks for the poor,
created UF and has already recruited expert instructors and raised funds for
this ambitious new endeavor.
In the 1980's, inspired by the Ti Legliz movement, Fr. Phillipe helped
organize the Peasant Association of Fondwa (APF) which brought Fondwa clean
water, a health clinic, a primary and secondary school, adult literacy,
reforestation, a community store, an orphanage, a restaurant and guest
house, a radio station and a credit union. FU developed from the APF's
realization that if its projects are to survive and grow, higher education
was essential.
If you would like to know more about FU, please join us for a wine and
cheese reception with Fr. Phillipe at the Brooklyn Society for Ethical
Culture, 53 Prospect Place West on October 26th at 7 pm. For more
information contact Wesley Aten at the FU Development Office, 420 Union
