The Borromeo String Quartet will play the first String Quartets by Brahms
and Ligeti and the world première of Haitian-born Jean R. Perrault’s
“Exodus” in a free concert at 8pm on October 30 at Emmanuel Church, 15
Newbury Street, Boston. The Borromeo is the internationally acclaimed
Quartet-in-Residence at New England Conservatory.

Co-sponsored by Emmanuel Church and Emmanuel Music, the concert is part of
“Radiant & Resilient: Haitian Art Today,” a series of events this fall for
Haitian and non-Haitian groups to explore together the originality and
vitality of Haitian art and to foster knowledge of Haitian culture in the
Boston community.

Haiti is a link between Nicholas Kitchen, founder of the Borromeo and
Artistic Director of the Cape Cod Chamber Music Festival, and composer
Perrault, now Assistant Professor of Music at the University of Minnesota,
Duluth. They became friends at Holy Trinity School summer music camp in
Haiti, where members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and other visitors
gave lessons. A leader in supporting these activities was the late Sister
Anne -Marie of the Society of St. Margaret, an Episcopal religious order
headquartered in Roxbury MA.

Nicholas went as a child with his mother, Dorothy Kitchen, who taught violin
to the teen-age “Rudy” Perrault before his studies at Tanglewood and Aspen
and degrees in music at Temple University.

“Exodus” is “dedicated to all those forced out of their homelands.” It was
inspired in part by Haitian paintings, says Perrault, such as those on
display at the Cambridge Art Association’s University Place Gallery, 124
Mount Auburn Street, Cambridge. Sales of the works and contributions support
construction of a Haitian Community Center for the New Jerusalem Evangelical
Baptist Church of Dorchester.
