Call for Papers

La Fondation Mémoire, a nonprofit cultural association established in New
York, is having its first annual conference for the Bicentennial of Haiti's
Independence.

Haiti, 1804-2004: From Slavery to Globalization

The conference calls for Haitianists, other scholars and practitioners to
examine the general achievements of Haiti through its 200 years of existence and
explore future perspectives of the Haitian society in the global context. It
will take place at York College, City University of NY, on April 16-17, 2004.

Guidelines for General Participation

Proposals must be submitted at the latest on November 15th, 2003. Please keep
your abstract to one page or 300 words with a brief biographical note. The
synopsis should include a title, the purpose of the study as well as the result
of the research. On one separate page, please state your full name and
professional affiliation, address, e-mail and telephone number.

The following sessions were approved:

Friday, April 16, 2004:

1. Economy and Emigration: causes and effects
2. Haiti: History, Memory and Patrimony
3. Culture and expressions in Haiti
4. Health in Haiti: Challenges and Solutions.

Saturday, April 17, 2004:

1. Trends and Challenges in Education and Linguistics
2. Trends and Challenges in Haitian Literature
3. Politics. Is there a political will for a decent survival of Haiti?
4. Identities and Immigration.

Lectures and presentations may be in Haitian Creole, French and English and
must be incorporated to one of the above sessions. In addition, panels should
include no more than three papers and a chair/discussant. La Fondation Mémoire
allows as many people as possible to participate in this forum. Thus, each
participant is limited to one paper presentation.

Notification of Decision:

Decision regarding acceptance or rejection of papers and panels will be
announced at the latest, December 15, 2003.

Registration:

All program participants must register for the conference.

Registration ($ 30.00) will begin January 5, 2004. One does not have to be a
member of Fondation Mémoire to present at the conference, but we encourage you
to join the organization ($ 30.00 yearly membership).

Buffet diner : $ 30.00

The conference will end in a convivial atmosphere; we are planning a Haitian
cultural show featuring two exceptional entertainers: the gifted
composer-singer Beethova Obas and Paulette Saint-Lot with her formidable dancers.

During both days, one may take a look at different tables where Haitian books
and videos on Haiti will be exposed and sold.

Please do not send your proposals by attachment. Fondation Mémoire encourages
you to submit your papers in full at the conference for after review, they
will be published.

Hotel Reservations:

York College is located near NY Kennedy Airport (15 minutes) and there are
many hotels in the vicinity. In future communication, Fondation Mémoire will
gladly provide a list of these hotels with their phone numbers.
