Embassy of the Republic of Haiti - October 31, 2003 .
Two hundred years ago, on November 18, 1803, the slave rebellion in the
island of Hispaniola reached its peak at Vertières, in the North of the future
Independent Haiti. Indeed, this epic battle which pitted the noble slave army
against the all powerful French Army was the final hurdle towards the Independence
of Haiti, the first black Republic, on January 1, 1804.
On November 18 2003, the Embassy of the Republic of Haiti will commemorate
the Bicentennial of the Battle of Vertières in a unique clebration which will
include:
• An historical retrospective "Horizon 2004 Haïti....un autre regard",
produced by the Permanent Delegation of Haïti to UNESCO. This exhibit, which depicts
the four eras of the evolution of Haiti's history, has been shown in Paris
and Brussels.
In order to put emphasis on the Battle of Vertières, apart from the main
themes,
the Exhibit will also feature some reproductions of famous works of art and
excerpts from literary and poetic creations describing this epic Battle.
• A special presentation by one of Haiti's best known poets and storytellers,
Mr. Jean-Claude Martineau (known by his pen name Koralen).
• An extraordinary concert of drums presented by the celebrated
master-drummer Fritzner Augustin and "La Troupe Makandal".
This Exhibit will remain open to the public from
Wednesday, November 19, through November 23, 2003,
from 10 a.m. 5 p.m., at
