17332: Re: 17322: Paryski deforestation (fwd)

From: PPARYSKI@aol.com

The causes of deforestation in Haiti are manifold:
--clearing every available square meter of land for agriculture which usually
involves slash and burn;
-charcoal production which generally does not occur high in the mountains;
-bakeries and dry cleaning;
-cutting wood for lumber/construction usually hardwoods, including mango
trees and the endemic pines (pinus occidentalis);
-cutting small amounts for fuel wood.

The underlying causes of deforestation are:
-degrading and widespread poverty forcing peasants to cut to survive;
- do nothing, kletocratic government (s);
-and over-population (too great a population for the natural resources base).

Soon there will only be wood for coffins and not even for refugee boats.

Hope this helps to clear up mis-understandings. Let's hope that Haiti, like
the phoenix of Christophe's coat of arms, rises again from its ashes.
