17430: (Chamberlain) Haiti-Opposition Attack (fwd)
From: Greg Chamberlain <GregChamberlain@compuserve.com>
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Nov 25 (AP) -- An opposition leader whose radio station
has become increasingly critical of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide was
wounded in a shooting Tuesday.
Jean-Robert Lalane, a leader in the opposition North District Front
coalition, was shot in the shoulder by one of two gunmen who scaled a wall
at his home in the northern city of Cap-Haitien.
Lalane, the owner of Radio Maxima, was hospitalized in stable condition,
said Frandley Denis Julien, another opposition leader.
The station, which has called for Aristide's resignation, had its
antenna damaged in one of a series of recent attacks. Citing death threats
to his staff, Lalane closed Radio Maxima for several days last month.
Haiti has been in turmoil since 2000 legislative elections that the
opposition says were rigged. Opposition political parties have refused to
participate in new legislative elections unless Aristide steps down.
In the past two months, clashes during anti-government protests have
left at least 15 dead and scores wounded across the impoverished Caribbean
nation.
