The thing is, the Haitian political climate can change extremely rapidly,
like
the wildfires in Southern California this past summer/fall. When the grass
is
dry all it takes is a few sparks and the whole thing goes up. That's the
way
change in past history has occurred. When Baby Doc was ousted in 1986
there was
a trigger incident in Gonaives when several students were murdered by the
army.
But the "drying out" had been doing on for several decades. Haiti is
pretty dry
right now and anything can happen. Maybe no single recent incident will be
the
trigger, but it is not a mistake to be alarmed at a critical incident in
one
small part of Haiti. It is a mistake to ignore the signs of trouble.
