Events to mark Haiti bicentennial

ian The Miami-Dade Public Library System will celebrate the 200th
anniversary of the proclamation of Haitian Independence by Jean-Jacques
Dessalines throughout this year. Scheduled free events include:

• The Tradition of Pumpkin Soup: Learn about the tradition of cooking soup
joumou from cooking teacher, author and storyteller Liliane Nerette Louis
and enjoy a delicious pumpkin soup cooking demonstration.; 2 p.m. Saturday;

• Louines Louinis Haitian Dance Theater: Lecture and demonstration of
authentic Haitian folk dances by Professor Louines Louinis and members of
his dance troupe; 11 a.m. Jan. 24; Lemon City Branch Library, 430 NE 61 St.,

• Meet the Author: Presentations by writers Genevieve Gaillard-Vante and
Jessica Sievre; 4:30 p.m. Jan. 29; Lemon City Branch Library.

• Lights of the Haitian Fanal, Contemporary Interpretations of Tradition and
Technique: Art exhibit by students of the Design and Architecture Senior
High School and Edouard Duval-Carrie, of fanals -- paper lanterns shaped
like houses; on exhibit Jan. 24 through May 31; Main Library, 101 W. Flagler
