18020: Arthur - BBC reports on students with guns (fwd)

Charles Arthur writes:

Although the BBC's reporting on the current situation leaves much to be
desired, there is an interesting section in "No escape from Haiti's Eternal City"
filed on 18 January 2004 by the BBC's 'eyewitness correspondent' Claire
Marshall. This extract, in which Boukman Eksperyans singer, Lolo Beaubrun, is quoted,
indicates that the anti-government side has guns and is prepared to use them
during demonstrations in the capital, Port-au-Prince.

Extract:
"A few miles away, and a man with long dreadlocks piled high up underneath
his red, green and gold knitted bonnet is talking heatedly with a group of
students, trying to persuade them not to take weapons with them on the next march.
The eyes behind his glasses are piercing. "That is not the right way!" he
tells them. "That route will lead only to civil war!" "
