1)
On Friday, 23rd January, 6 - 9 pm, the opening night of Leah Gordon's
'Kanaval' photo exhibition, and launch of the Oakleaf Press CD of Paul Foot's 1991
talk on 'Toussaint L'Ouverture and the Haitian Revolution'.

A the Brunei Gallery, School of Oriental and African Studies, central London.

Leah Gordon's set of photographs and stories from Jacmel continues on show
until 19 March 2004. The exhibition is a tribute to Haiti’s history, struggle
and creativity. The photographer has also collected oral histories from the
group leaders which tell the stories behind the masques, and help to both
contextualise and animate the work. See:

On the evening of the exhibition launch, Dr John Cussans of Richmond
International University will give a talk entitled, "Vodou, Possession, and the
Revolutionary Unconscious".

The event is organised by the Haiti Support Group and is sponsored by
Christian Aid.

On Saturday, 7th February, 10.45am, Rod Prince, journalist and Caribbean
expert, will give a 200th anniversary talk
on "Haiti: the first independent black republic".

At Cafe Diplo at the French Institute, 17 Queensberry Place, London SW7.

A chaired discussion will follow.

Rod Prince is the author of "Haiti: Family Business", London: Latin America
Bureau, 1985, and former editor of the monthly Caribbean Insight.
