Helping in Haiti
Food for the Poor applauds The Herald's efforts to publicize the struggle of
the Haitian people in South Florida. It is a story that needed to be told,
for most residents do not fully understand the enormity and complexity of
the worsening crisis facing Haiti today.
Haitians are no different from the multitude of ethnic groups that make up
America's diverse society. They want the opportunity to lead productive
lives, raise families and participate in communities. Their inability to do
this is precisely what brought them to America. Haiti has become a tragedy,
a country where the unemployment rate is approaching 85 percent, more than
80 percent of the population lives in abject poverty and hundreds of
children die before they reach the age of 5 because of contaminated water.
Haiti needs major assistance, and Food for the Poor is dedicated to breaking
the devastating cycle of poverty, one child and one family at a time. We are
committed to restoring hope in the lives of our poorest neighbor. We believe
that once the country can offer an acceptable standard of living, Haitians
will no longer risk their lives in search of an opportunity to live with
dignity and to dream of a better future.
