Students speak out
in protest of Aristide
>From Herald Wire Services
PORT-AU-PRINCE -- Hundreds of students took victory laps around a university
building on Monday at the end of a demonstration against embattled President
Jean-Bertrand Aristide.
Last week, police shot tear gas to break up three of four anti-government
demonstrations planned by the students.
''Our protests are peaceful,'' said student Paul Henry Mesilien, 25. ``We
have the right, and we will continue to demonstrate.''
Caribbean leaders have been trying to address the political crisis, meeting
in the Bahamas last week with Haitian opposition members and with Aristide
on Sunday at the National Palace.
In an incident not related to the protest, a man claiming to be an Aristide
supporter said a group of six armed men abducted him Monday from a street in
the capital, doused him with gasoline and set him on fire.
