Audio CD: Toussaint L'Ouverture & the Haitian Slave Revolt
To mark Haiti's bicentenary, Oakleaf Recordings has published a CD of a
lecture by Paul Foot, the renowned British campaigning journalist, delivered in
1991 to mark the 200th anniversary of the opening the revolt.
Based on CLR James' classic study 'The Black Jacobins', Paul Foot vividly
describes the conditions of the slaves and what led to the revolt, how Toussaint
rose as leader, the dynamic of the revolution and the different phases it
passed through, how it succeeded and how it influenced the French Revolution.
A central feature of this talk is a challenge to the idea that William
Wilberforce was responsible for the abolition of slavery. Following on from James,
this account places the slaves at the centre of their own emancipation and
explains how this freedom struggle convinced those fighting the aristocratic
regime of colonial France to end the 'aristocracy of the skin' too.
Encompassing an array of obscured history and facts, Paul Foot brings the
lessons of these events to life in a compelling and humourous way. He starts out
with the claim that the Haitian slave revolt is one of the most important
chapters in history, and ends with an appeal to read C.L.R. James' 'Black
Jacobins'. In one hour, he manages to convince on both these points.
