18779: Wolf: report from cap haitien (fwd)

From: casey wolf <caseyjwolf@yahoo.ca>

Hi Everyone,

Wish I had time and fuel to write to each one of you
individually. We
appreciate all of you and your prayers and especially
your notes of
concern.

We are still here in Cap and are doing fine. Things
have, indeed,
been
pretty tense lately. It is true that different towns
around us have
been taken
over by "rebels". Most people are expecting that they
will be coming
to Cap,
but the Lavalas people have been pretty tough and are
blocking the
roads on both
sides of town saying they are trying to protect the
population from
invasion.
Yesterday afternoon, for some reason, there was a
panic in
Cap-Haitien. All
of a sudden everyone was yelling that the rebels had
come and people
were
running every which way and screaming. We were at the
center and
someone came
and told us this "news". In reality, nothing
happened, and the police
are still
in control on the town and everything is calm this
morning. I just
went to
the airport to take a young volunteer friend (not from
our
organization, but
she's on her own and young so has been staying with
us) to buy a
ticket.
Everything was running normally. There somehow has
been a rumor
circulated in the
U.S. that the airport in Cap was taken over by
"rebels" yesterday. I
was
there from 11 am to 2:30 pm yesterday and saw nothing
that would lead
one to
believe that. As I said, flights are coming in and
out normally today
too and
traffic was circulating from town.

We are watching things pretty carefully, but don't
feel in danger or
scared.
We are willing to come out, but don't feel the need to
do that yet. It
is
very possible that the "rebels" could come in and
it'll all be over
with a
couple shots. (It was over in Hinche in a couple of
hours, and the
people who were
killed were police who refused to surrender. ) We
don't want to be
foolish,
but also don't want to join the throngs that are
panicking and making
decisions based on a lot of rumors.

Please pray for us to have wisdom and safety. Also,
please pray for
all the
folks around us, especially the very poor who are
living hand to mouth
and are
very vulnerable at times like this.

We appreciate you! We'll try to continue to be in touch!

i am no longer young
but the wind and waters are
what falls away will fall
all things lead me to love
