Gibson. Ase sees itself as a vehicle for linking traditional forms and
aesthetics of
African dance with its contemporary models.
La Troupe Makandal takes its name from the legendary Haitian freedom
fighter, Makandal. It was founded in 1973 by a group from Port-au-Prince,
Haiti and emigrated to New York in 1981. Mr. Frisner Augustin is its
artistic director and Dr. Lois Wilcken, a musicologist, executive
director. La Troupe Makandal presents suites based on the dances of
Vodou, Carnival, Rara and the Konbit, and teaches traditional Haitian
music and dance. The company serves to enlighten the general public about
Haiti through music and dance which also serves to repudiate racist
