U.S., Haiti play to a draw in Orange Bowl
Associated Press
Dan Calif's goal four minutes into stoppage time of the second half helped
the United States salvage a 1-1 tie against Haiti in an international
friendly Saturday.
Calif chested in a shot past Haiti goalkeeper Fenelon Gabard as Haiti was
seconds from recording the victory before a partisan Haitian crowd at the
Orange Bowl.
Haiti took a 1-0 lead on Alexander Boucicot's goal in the 69th minute.
Midfielder Wasdon Coriolan's pass from the left wing found an unmarked
Boucicot on the other side of the field. Boucicot dribbled five yards into
the penalty area, where his blast from the right wing landed on the upper
corner of the far post.
With a squad composed primarily of players from its under-23 selection,
Haiti - which leads the all-time series 6-5-4 - stood its ground against the
more experienced U.S. side throughout the 90 minutes.
Prior to Boucicot's goal, Boucicot nearly put Haiti ahead in the 67th minute
but his shot sailed over the crossbar. Haiti also had several scoring
threats in the first half.
Johnny Descollines twice broke past the U.S. defense and ran deep into the
penalty area but his shots at the 20th and 30th minutes were stopped on
goalkeeper Johnny Walker's diving deflections.
Haiti had a goal at the 34th minute disallowed when Bruny Pierre-Richard's
goal was negated after a foul by Jean-Phillipe Peguero.
Cory Gibbs nearly gave the United States a lead in stoppage time of the
first half but his header deep inside the box was cleared by Coriolan.
In the 10th minute Landon Donovan's header just outside the 6-yard box went
wide off the left post.
The United States' next match will be a friendly against Poland on March 31.
